Hello, my name is Soo-yeon (Sally) Kim, and I’m a Junior at Troy High School. KACC has been part of my life since my freshman year. It has not only helped me build some amazing friendships, it has also given me opportunities to give back to my Korean community. Among all the memories I have from KACC, my favorite was the Kimchi fes-tival last year. Wearing a sky blue Hanbok with my hair braided in the back, I felt closer to the beauty of Korean culture than I had in a while. I remem-ber seeing a little girl behind a big box of cabbage and kimchi, looking a bit unsure of what to do with her small hands wearing a pair of plastic gloves that were way too big for her. Looking at her eyes, I could see the same

enthusiasm I had– and still have– about Korean culture, so I walked over to her and asked, “Do you want to learn how to make kimchi?” As we evenly spread the kimchi spice into the layers of the cabbage and made our final touches, taking the outermost leaf and wrapping it around the whole body to create a round shape, the little girl asked me, “what goes into the spice?” So I handed her an or-ange piece of paper with de-tailed information about making Kimchi, and also whispered in her ear my grandmother’s top

secret kimchi recipe ;) She thanked me and held her pre-cious handmade box of kimchi

close to her, and her excited smile made me feel grateful be-yond words that she got to ex-plore her own culture further, and I had gotten the chance to be part of it. Moments like these are why I love volunteering at KACC.

An idea I propose for KACC is an improvement in our communi-cation system at the Air Show volunteering. I’ve volunteered here three times, and every time, it was very difficult for us and the drivers to communicate be-cause of how loud the airplanes were. I believe making signs reading “PARK LEFT TIRE NEXT TO FLAG” will make the entire process more efficient and less stressful for both the vol-unteers and the drivers. We could offer volunteer hours for students who help make these signs and have them include elements of Korea ranging from our traditional culture, flag, and modern symbols like Samsung and BTS.

What does it mean to be a part of a culture? It can be a way to connect with your ancestors, your country, or even a sense of self-identity. However, what I found most compelling about being a part of a culture was the community it connects me to, especially living in America, where being part of a culture and community helps people feel less isolated. This leader-ship position gives me the abil-ity to impact our Korean-American community further positively and give back to my community for the endless sup-port they have given me.

Growing up as a first-generation Korean-American, I’ve always felt a sense of pride

whenever I was surrounded by my culture. Whether it was wearing my hanbok, visiting Korea, or something simple as eating my grandma’s food, there is nothing more comforting than

embracing my Korean identity. I am proud of my culture and who I am, which will make me a

great leader for the KACC. My goal is to inspire Korean youths to be proud of who they are and

be a good example of a leader who cares. I am dedicated to this program because I want to

continue acknowledging my heritage and not forget where we came from and who we are. I want to celebrate my traditions amongst other Koreans so we can all feel connected to our country even if we are 10,575 kilometers away from our home.

I want to give back to my com-munity that raised me and taught me what it means to be

Korean. To be proud of who I am and what I represent. Lead-ership will allow me to guide

younger generations of Koreans to the same passion that I found.

The definition of leadership ac-cording to the Oxford dictionary is “the action of leading a group of people or an organization”. My definition of leadership is being a supportive member that people can rely on to guide them to suc-cess. If I was the president of KACC I would make sure to be that supportive member in my definition of leadership. I would want to help others and make sure they are confident on what their role is during events. I would also make sure people have infor-mation of the events that are tak-ing place and give out reminders. I would make sure that everyone feels comfortable with eachother and I be someone who they can always ask any questions to whenever they need. Joining KACC back in the school year of 2018-2019 helped me get to know everyone and feel comfortable with this organization. At first, my 8th grade self was very nervous and stuck around my sister, but as time went by I soon learned that I love the community and opened up more. I also was a member of KACC when the height of the pan-demic happened. This made me learn many things and allowed me to adapt from the changes made from covid-19. The events I have participated in was always fun to attend, such as the air show, the passport event, kimchi event, cherry blossom event, even the clean up events, and more. Being around others and helping out was never something I dreaded. This is why my commitment does not have to questioned, I enjoy being present and look forward to future events I am able to go to. To sum it all up, I think this oppor-tunity to be a leader for an organi-zation like KACC is something I always looked forward to. I would love to put my personality and organization skills to help others in this coalition and make a differ-ence. I would make sure everyone is welcomed, especially the new people because I have been there and know how intimidating it is. I was also from a different school and lived far away from most the students in the group, but now I am confident that I can speak to them without being afraid. I will make sure everyone feels compla-cent and also look forward to helping out like how I do. I am also passionate about about our culture and love getting involved.
