언제나 지치지 않는 뜨거운 열정으로 고국의 문화와 역사를 미국 사회에 알리고자 앞장서신 남상용 박사님. 박사님의 별세 소식은 미시건 한인사회 뿐 아니라 미국 동포사회에도 크나큰 슬픔이며 안타까움이었습니다.
박사님은 아메리칸 드림을 가진 모든 이에게 귀감이 되는 표본이셨습니다. 일제 강점기와 한국전쟁 등 역사적 소용돌이 속에서도 학업에 대한 열의를 더욱 강하게 불태우시고 서울대학교 건축학과에 진학하셨습니다. 졸업 후, 선진 건축기술을 배우기 위해 단돈 4달러와 원대한 꿈을 가지고 미시건대학교 건축도시학과에 유학을 오셨습니다. 반드시 성공하여 한국의 위상을 세계에 알리겠다던 이 꿈 많던 돈키호테 청년은 불굴의 도전정신과 특유의 성실함을 바탕으로 미국 사회에서 성공하였고, 박사님의 성공담은 오늘날 꿈을 키워나가고 있는 젊은 세대에게 귀감이 되었습니다.
박사님은 개인의 성공에 안주하지 않고, 한국의 문화를 후세와 미국 사회에 전할 수 있는 뜻 깊은 일에 앞장서기를 원하셨습니다. 미시건 대학교 한국학 연구소 후원회장으로서 한국학 연구를 위해 Nam Center for Korean Studies 를 미시건 대학교내에 탄생시켰습니다. 남 센터는 미국 내에서 가장 활발한 한국학 연구소로 자리 잡아 가고 있으며, 미시건 대학교 학생들과 지역사회에 한국이 보다 가까운 나라로 새겨지는 뜻 깊은 계기가 되었습니다. 지난해, 남 센터 건립 기념식에서 투병 중이심에도 불구하고 열정적으로 한국의 우수성을 설파하셨습니다. 박사님은 미시건 대학교 외에도, 고국의 여러 대학들에 후학양성을 위한 장학금을 기부하셨고, 미시건의 캘빈 칼리지에 한국어 수업 개설을 위해 기부한 사실도 매우 잘 알려진 사실입니다. 이렇듯 박사님은 한국을 알리는 전도사로서 적극적으로 활동을 하며 당신이 이룬 것을 고국의 이름으로 사회에 환원하고자 하셨습니다. 이러한 당신의 고귀한 뜻을 기려 대한민국 정부는 국민훈장 목련장이라는 명예로운 상을 수여 하였습니다.
지칠 줄 모르는 힘으로 한국의 위상을 알리기 위해 일생을 달리셨던 박사님을 통하여 우리는 함께 나누는 삶의 가치에 대하여 배우게 되었습니다. 서로를 보듬고 함께 나누는 삶과 멀어져 가는 우리에게 나눔이 우리 안의 행복을 가져다준다는 교훈을 주셨습니다. 넓은 가슴과 행동으로 이웃에 대한 사랑을 증명하셨고, 위암 선고를 받으신 후에도 이 땅의 꿈 많은 젊은이들에게 용기와 자극을 주고자 하셨습니다.
다시 한 번 박사님님을 추모하며 박사님이 남기신 유지를 마음 깊이 되새깁니다. 희망과 긍정의 힘을 보여주셨던 남상용 선생님께 애정과 존경을 표하며, 남상용 선생님께서 남기신 교훈은 세대를 넘어 전해지기를 기원합니다.

Grandpa, I miss you so much. I am so proud of you and want to thank you for everything. You are my #1 grandpa, and will always be in my heart. I love you so much, I just keep waiting for you to come back. I loved how energetic and positive you were. And, I will keep all the memories we shared and cherish it.
