존경하는 내외 귀빈 여러분, 그리고 미시간 동포 여러분,
바쁘신 가운데 오늘 제 11회 미주 한인의 날 행사에 참석해주신 여러분께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 오늘은 우리 선조들이 1903년 1월 13일 하와이에 이민의 첫발을 내디딘 날을 기념하기위해 미국 연방의회가 2005년 지정하여 이듬해부터 기념식을 해오고 있는 참으로 뜻깊은 날입니다.
113년전 102명의 이민선조들을 태운 겔릭호가 하와이의 사탕수수농장에 도착하였습니다. 그 이후 선조들은 문화도 관습도 다르고 말도 통하지 않는 이민 생활의 역경을 피와 땀과 눈물로 헤쳐 나아갔습니다. 그리고 100여 년이 지나오면서 당당히 다방면에서 미국의 발전에 기여하며 주류사회의 한 축을 담당하게 되었습니다. 미국 상하원은 그 공로를 높이 평가하여 만장일치로 미국내 270여개 민족 가운데 유일하게 한인들을 위한 기념일을 지정하였습니다. 오늘을 전후에 디트로이트 한인회를 비롯한 미국내 한인 단체들이 전국에서 기념행사를 진행하고 있습니다. 이는 참으로 가슴 뭉클한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다.
동포 여러분,
최근 한미우호관계는 그 어느 때보다도 돈독해졌습니다. 자유민주주의를 수호하는 우방으로서 인류평화를 위해 양국 정부는 물론 민간차원에서도 긴밀한 유대관계를 유지하고 발전시키기위해 노력을 아끼지 않고 있습니다. 문화, 경제, 산업, 교육 등 거의 모든 분야에서 교류와 협력을 이어가고 있습니다. 미약하나마 디트로이트 한인회도 이에 동참하며 그 역할을 충실히 담당하고자 합니다. 오늘 미주 한인의 날을 맞아 여러분의 많은 관심과 성원을 당부드리고자 합니다.
한국과 미국은 물론 이곳 미시간에 거주하는 모든 분들께 하느님의 축복이 함께 하길 기원합니다.

Honored guests, and Michigan compatriots
Thank you for attending our 11th celebration of the Korean American Day despite of your busy schedule. Today is a very special day for us. Our forefathers stepped in the first step of immigrants in the January 13, 1903 in Hawaii, and the day as the Korean American Day designated by the US Congress in 2005. We have been celebrating this special day from 2006.
One hundred thirteen years ago, 102 Korean ancestors immigrated to Hawaii’s sugar cane plantations via Gelrik ship. After they arrived in Hawaii, our ancestors had to learn to better navigate the difficulties of immigrant life while struggling with sweat and tears.
Past one hundred years, Korean Americans contributed to the development of the United States in various fields.
Both houses of the United States to appreciate the merits of the Korean Americans from 270 various ethnic groups in the US, they designated the Day for Korean Americans. Many Korean organizations are celebrating this special day with their community
Current Korean-American relationship is closer than ever. For world peace, both countries are working as allies to defend the democracy as well as spare effort to maintain close ties and development in the private sector. Cultural, economic, industry, and education. In Detroit, Korean American Community also wants to participate in that effort.
